Week 1 Post 1: "Why Does Architecture Matter"

In my 3 pages of reading in "Why Does Architecture Matter" by Paul Goldberger I read that architecture is an important element in our life, but it isn’t everything in it. What architecture brings in our life is culture and it makes our life better. It lets us see creativity and makes us feel happier to recognize it and feel comfortable that we can see other’s creativity. For example, the Lincoln Cathedral is a masterpiece that we would admire once we saw it.

Architecture is about design, time, effort, and creativity. Everything that is built is architecture, it just depends on the person that creates and the time it takes to create.  Like the example in the book “Why does Architecture Matter”, the author uses a bicycle shed and the Lincoln Cathedral to show the difference between the two creators and the time they took to build it. The creator of the Lincoln Cathedral took more time, effort, design, and creativity than it did to the creator of the bicycle shed. Architecture matters, simply because it makes our life better.

  1. I really like how you used two very different things to compare them. It was interesting how you used the Lincoln Cathedral and a bike shed pictures to get your point across

  2. Thanks :) the book helped me get a better understanding of the differences in architecture by using these two examples.

  3. I agree completely when you say architecture "helps us" because that statement is fairly accurate. Architecture surrounds us and it is beautiful to look at, but when it comes down to it one can see that it serves its basic function the best; a shelter, and in the end it really does help us.
