Week 2 Post 1: The Johnson Building

The Johnson building is a very interesting building because of the reason it was created. The building was created in Racine, Wisconsin by a very important architecture named Frank Lloyd Wright in 1936. The reason why it was created was because the architect was very annoyed by the city and he wanted to create something that would be a new world inside the world. He wanted to create a place in which nothing from the outside came in the inside and that’s exactly what he created. I thought that this idea was very good because I never thought that a building could extract all the noise from the real world and just the way it was build was very impressing by the way he put together a planar and kind of sculptural building together to attract people from the outside but also to keep them out, such an irony.
The building serves many purposes but the main purpose is that it’s an office building that has 200 workers. The office is constructed by the image of what I believe is a Lilly pond because of how the columns are shaped and how they let the sun come in just like the actual Lily Pond does in the water and I think it’s very beautiful. Aside from serving as an office building it also has a cafeteria, a place to sing and act so that workers can get away from work a bit I believe. It’s just such a marvelous building.

  1. I also found it interesting about how the building kept sound out. Also I thought the columns with an enlarged surface area on top looked like lily pads.
